Watch South Miami Hospital Surgeons Perform Robot-Assisted Prostatectomy

South Miami Hospital’s Center for Robotic Surgery will take center stage Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 4 p.m., when viewers of a live webcast will watch as urologist Avelino Piñon, M.D., uses the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System to perform a radical prostatectomy.  The live webcast will be narrated by urologist Darren Bruck, M.D.  Viewers also can choose to watch the procedure in Spanish.

A radical prostatectomy is the removal of the prostate gland and some surrounding tissue.  The da Vinci robot makes operating on the sensitive anatomy of the urologic system easier and more precise.  The magnified view it provides gives the surgeon a clear picture of the anatomy surrounding the prostate gland, helping to preserve and protect the delicate nerves.

With the da Vinci, only five small incisions are made in the patient’s abdomen.  A surgeon sits away from the operating table at a console, where he controls with his hands and feet the robotic arms inserted into the patient through the incisions.  One of the arms operates a laparoscopic camera that helps the surgeon see a three-dimensional view inside the patient.  The other arms function as the surgeon’s own hands and wrists to remove tissue.

Dr. Piñon and Dr. Bruck, who have performed more than 200 procedures combined since 2007 using the da Vinci robot, will perform the radical prostatectomy as part of Baptist Health South Florida’s effort to broadcast various surgeries and procedures on the web.

South Miami Hospital is part of Baptist Health South Florida, the largest faith-based, not-for-profit healthcare organization in the region.
